Dee Shackle – 2T WLL
Forged alloy steel dee shackle rated to 2 tonnes WLL, designed for inline chain and rope rigging applications where a narrow profile is required.
Detailed Overview
A dee shackle — named for its distinctive D-shaped body — is a load-bearing connector designed to keep forces travelling in a straight, inline path. Unlike a bow shackle (also called an anchor shackle), whose wide, rounded bow can accommodate multiple legs of a sling or multi-directional loads, the dee shackle's narrow profile is intentionally restrictive. This geometry ensures the load remains aligned with the pin axis, eliminating the lateral movement that causes side-loading. Side-loading dramatically reduces a shackle's working load limit and can lead to catastrophic deformation, which is why the dee shackle is the preferred choice whenever a single, direct line of pull is required.
Dee shackles are widely used across chain and rope rigging applications where a compact, low-profile connector is essential. Common uses include lifting operations with chain slings, inline connections between wire rope segments, lashing and securing cargo, and towing arrangements where the load path must remain consistent and predictable. Their slender body passes easily through chain links and fits neatly into rigging hardware, making them indispensable in marine, construction, and industrial lifting environments. When connecting to a master link or a hook, the dee shackle's straight sides prevent rotation and keep the assembly stable under dynamic loads.
Safe use of a dee shackle depends on strict adherence to several key practices. Always select a shackle rated to the correct Working Load Limit (WLL) for the application, and never exceed it — shock loading can impose forces many times the static load. Never apply a side load to a dee shackle; if multi-directional loading is anticipated, a bow shackle is the appropriate choice. Before each use, inspect the shackle body and pin for signs of wear, corrosion, cracks, or deformation, and remove any suspect hardware from service immediately. Ensure the screw pin is fully tightened and the cotter pin or mousing wire is correctly seated to prevent accidental unscrewing under vibration. All dee shackles used in lifting applications should conform to EN 13889 or an equivalent recognised standard, and traceability documentation should be maintained as required by local regulations.
