Overview

Product Overview

The ZERUST®/EXCOR® ActivCapsule™ FAC1-1(S) is a compact, drop-in corrosion inhibitor capsule designed to protect metal components in enclosed or confined spaces. Leveraging ZERUST®’s industry-leading Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) technology, the capsule continuously emits a protective vapour that migrates to all exposed metal surfaces within an enclosure — including areas that are physically inaccessible to conventional coatings or contact-based inhibitors.

The FAC1-1(S) is classified as a Flash-Corrosion Prevention product, making it particularly effective in environments where rapid surface oxidation is a risk — such as during storage, transit, or seasonal shutdown of equipment. It can be deployed as a primary protection solution or used to supplement existing ZERUST® VCI packaging, films, and emitters.

How VCI Technology Works

Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) technology works through a process of controlled vapour-phase diffusion. Once the ActivCapsule is placed inside an enclosure, it releases VCI molecules into the surrounding atmosphere. These molecules migrate through the air and adsorb onto all exposed metal surfaces — including recessed cavities, blind holes, and complex geometries — forming an ultra-thin, invisible molecular layer.

This molecular barrier interrupts the electrochemical reactions responsible for corrosion, effectively neutralising the effects of moisture, oxygen, and corrosive contaminants. Critically, the protective layer is non-oily, non-toxic, and leaves no residue — metals can be put into service immediately upon removal from the protected enclosure, with no cleaning or degreasing required.

Key Use Cases

Enclosed Spaces and Hard-to-Reach Areas

The FAC1-1(S) is specifically engineered for enclosures where conventional corrosion protection methods are impractical. Suitable applications include:

  • Electrical control panels, junction boxes, and switchgear cabinets
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic system housings
  • Gearboxes, motors, and mechanical assemblies during storage or shutdown
  • Toolboxes, spare parts bins, and maintenance kits
  • Shipping containers and transit packaging for metal components

Supplementing ZERUST® VCI Packaging Systems

The ActivCapsule FAC1-1(S) integrates seamlessly into broader ZERUST® VCI protection strategies. It can be added to packages, crates, or enclosures already utilising ZERUST® VCI films, bags, or wraps to boost protection levels — particularly in large-volume enclosures or where VCI film coverage may be incomplete. This layered approach ensures comprehensive protection across complex assemblies.

Industries Served

The FAC1-1(S) is widely adopted across industries where metal asset integrity is critical, particularly in the Gulf and broader Middle East region:

  • Oil & Gas: Protection of instrumentation, valves, and control equipment in offshore and onshore facilities
  • Manufacturing & Heavy Industry: Safeguarding machined parts, tooling, and assemblies during production downtime or inter-facility transit
  • Marine & Ports: Corrosion control for shipboard equipment, deck machinery, and port infrastructure exposed to high-humidity, salt-laden environments
  • Defence & Aerospace: Long-term preservation of sensitive military hardware, spare parts, and ordnance components
  • Power Generation & Utilities: Protection of electrical switchgear, transformers, and rotating equipment during planned outages

Application Guidance

Applying the ActivCapsule FAC1-1(S) requires no specialist tools or training. Follow these steps for optimal protection:

  1. Ensure the enclosure or packaging is reasonably sealed to retain VCI vapour concentration.
  2. Place or hang the capsule inside the enclosure — no direct contact with metal surfaces is required.
  3. Seal the enclosure. The capsule will begin emitting VCI vapour immediately.
  4. Replace the capsule at the end of its rated service life or when the enclosure is opened for extended periods.

For large enclosures or high-risk environments, consult ZERUST® application guidelines to determine the appropriate number of capsules per unit volume.

Safety and Compliance

ZERUST® VCI products are formulated to be safe for use with personnel and equipment. The ActivCapsule FAC1-1(S) is non-toxic, non-flammable, and does not contain nitrites, phosphates, or heavy metals. It is compliant with RoHS directives and is suitable for use in environments with stringent health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements. Always refer to the product Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full handling, storage, and disposal guidance.
