نظرة عامة
Product Overview
The Weld Neck Flange is a high-integrity pipe flange designed for the most demanding high-pressure and high-temperature piping systems. Its defining characteristic is a long tapered hub that transitions smoothly from the flange face to the pipe wall, distributing mechanical stress evenly and significantly reducing the risk of fatigue failure at the joint. The flange is butt-welded to the mating pipe, producing a full-penetration weld that matches the strength and integrity of the pipe itself.
Weld neck flanges are the preferred choice in critical service applications where safety, reliability, and long service life are paramount. They conform to ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47 standards and are widely specified in oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and water treatment industries.
Materials
Weld neck flanges are available in a range of materials to suit different process media and environmental conditions:
- Carbon Steel – ASTM A105: The standard material for general-purpose and high-pressure applications. Offers excellent mechanical strength and is suitable for temperatures from −29 °C to 538 °C.
- Stainless Steel 304: Provides good corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive environments and is suitable for food-grade and general chemical service.
- Stainless Steel 316: Enhanced corrosion resistance due to molybdenum content, suitable for chloride-bearing and marine environments.
- Stainless Steel 316L: Low-carbon variant of 316, minimising sensitisation during welding and ideal for highly corrosive chemical processing applications.
Size Range
Weld neck flanges are available in nominal pipe sizes from 1/2" to 64" (DN 15 to DN 1600), covering the full spectrum from small-bore instrument lines to large-diameter transmission pipelines. Custom sizes outside this range can be manufactured to order.
Pressure Classes
These flanges are manufactured to the following pressure rating standards:
- ANSI/ASME Classes: Class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 — covering low-pressure utility service through ultra-high-pressure critical service.
- DIN Pressure Ratings: PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40, PN63, and PN100 — conforming to European DIN/EN standards for metric piping systems.
Long Tapered Hub Design
The long tapered hub is the defining engineering feature of the weld neck flange. The gradual taper from the flange body to the pipe bore serves several critical functions:
- Stress distribution: Transfers bending loads from the flange to the pipe gradually, preventing stress concentration at the weld toe.
- Fatigue resistance: Significantly improves resistance to cyclic loading and thermal cycling compared to slip-on or socket-weld flanges.
- Bore matching: The bore is matched to the pipe's inner diameter, eliminating turbulence, erosion, and crevice corrosion at the joint.
Typical Applications
Weld neck flanges are specified across a broad range of critical industries:
- Oil & Gas: Wellheads, manifolds, pipelines, and process vessels operating under high pressure.
- Petrochemical: Reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers, and chemical transfer lines.
- Power Generation: Steam lines, boiler feed systems, and turbine inlet/outlet piping subject to high temperature and pressure.
- Water Treatment: High-pressure filtration systems, desalination plants, and municipal water transmission mains.
Installation Notes
Weld neck flanges are connected to pipe using a butt-weld joint. The pipe end is prepared with a matching bevel, aligned with the flange bore, and joined using a full-penetration groove weld in accordance with ASME IX or equivalent welding procedure specifications. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) may be required depending on material grade, wall thickness, and service conditions. Radiographic or ultrasonic examination of the weld is recommended for critical service applications.
