Detailed Overview

Grade 80 chain slings are heavy-duty lifting assemblies manufactured from high-tensile alloy steel, engineered to deliver exceptional strength in a compact and relatively lightweight form. The "Grade 80" designation refers to the minimum tensile strength of the steel — 800 N/mm² — which gives these slings a significant load-bearing advantage over lower-grade alternatives. Unlike synthetic slings, which are vulnerable to heat, sharp edges, and chemical exposure, Grade 80 alloy steel chain slings maintain their full Working Load Limit (WLL) at temperatures up to 200°C, making them inherently more durable in demanding thermal environments. This heat resistance, combined with their resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage, positions them as the preferred choice wherever synthetic or wire rope slings would be unsuitable.

Grade 80 chain slings are widely deployed across the most demanding sectors of heavy industry. In steel mills and foundries, they handle molten metal ladles, billets, and castings where elevated ambient temperatures are unavoidable. Offshore oil and gas platforms rely on them for subsea equipment handling and deck lifts, where corrosion resistance and reliable performance under shock loading are critical. Shipbuilding yards use Grade 80 slings for positioning hull sections, engine blocks, and heavy machinery during vessel construction and dry-dock maintenance. Their versatility across single-leg, multi-leg, and basket configurations means they can be adapted to virtually any lift geometry, from straightforward vertical picks to complex multi-point lifts requiring precise load distribution.

To ensure continued safe operation, Grade 80 chain slings must be subject to regular inspection and disciplined maintenance. Before each use, operators should visually examine every chain link, master link, and hook for signs of wear, elongation, cracks, gouges, or corrosion. Any link showing more than 10% wear on its cross-section, or any component that has been subjected to a shock load, must be removed from service immediately. Periodic thorough inspections by a competent person — typically at intervals not exceeding twelve months — are required under EN 818-4 and equivalent standards. After use, slings should be cleaned, lightly lubricated to prevent corrosion, and stored hanging on a dedicated rack away from chemicals, moisture, and UV exposure. Maintaining accurate inspection records and traceability documentation for each sling assembly is essential for compliance and operational safety.
