Overview
What Are VCI Sachets?
Vapour Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) sachets are passive corrosion-protection devices that release a controlled vapour of corrosion-inhibiting molecules into an enclosed space. These molecules form an invisible, monomolecular protective layer on all exposed metal surfaces — including complex geometries and hard-to-reach areas — without any direct contact. When the sachet is removed or the enclosure is opened, the protective layer dissipates cleanly, leaving metals ready for immediate use with no residue, cleaning, or degreasing required.
ZERUST® ActivPak®(LS) sachets are engineered for fast emission, reaching protective vapour concentrations rapidly — a critical advantage in environments where flash corrosion can occur within minutes of metal exposure to humid or salt-laden air.
The LS (Low Sulphur) Advantage
The '(LS)' designation indicates a low-sulphur formulation, specifically developed for environments where sulphur-sensitive metals — such as silver, copper, and certain electronic components — must be protected. The LS formula eliminates the risk of sulphide tarnishing or corrosion that standard VCI chemistries can cause on reactive metals, making ActivPak®(LS) suitable for mixed-metal assemblies and sensitive electrical or instrumentation equipment common in oil & gas and power generation facilities.
Key Application Environments
ZERUST® ActivPak®(LS) sachets are designed for the most corrosion-aggressive industrial settings:
- Oil & Gas Facilities: Protect valves, flanges, instrumentation, and spare parts in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
- Marine Vessels & Offshore Platforms: Combat salt-air and high-humidity corrosion in engine rooms, cargo holds, and equipment lockers.
- Power Plants: Safeguard turbine components, switchgear, and electrical panels during storage, maintenance shutdowns, and transit.
- Waste Treatment Facilities: Protect pumps, pipes, and control equipment in chemically aggressive, high-moisture environments.
- Manufacturing & Warehousing: Preserve finished goods, tooling, and spare parts inventory during storage and inter-facility shipment.
How to Use ActivPak®(LS) Sachets
Placement is straightforward and requires no specialist training:
- Determine the enclosed volume (in cubic feet or litres) of the space to be protected.
- Select the appropriate sachet size and quantity based on the coverage rating.
- Place sachets inside the enclosure — on top of, beside, or suspended above the metal components. No direct contact with metal surfaces is required.
- Seal the enclosure (packaging, cabinet, container, or bag) to maintain the protective vapour atmosphere.
- Replace sachets at the end of their rated service life or when the enclosure is opened for extended periods.
Performance in Gulf & Middle East Conditions
The Gulf and Middle East region presents some of the world's most severe corrosion challenges: relative humidity regularly exceeding 80%, airborne salt concentrations from coastal and offshore proximity, and ambient temperatures that can surpass 50 °C. Standard corrosion protection methods often fail under these conditions, leading to costly equipment failures and unplanned downtime.
ZERUST® ActivPak®(LS) sachets are formulated and tested to perform across a wide operating temperature range, maintaining effective vapour emission even under high-heat conditions. The fast-acting emission profile ensures that protective concentrations are established quickly — before flash corrosion can take hold — making them particularly well-suited to the rapid humidity swings experienced in the region.
Safety & Compliance
ZERUST® VCI products are developed in accordance with international corrosion protection standards and are non-toxic, non-flammable, and safe for use around personnel. The sachets do not contain nitrites, phosphates, or heavy metals. They are compatible with a broad range of packaging materials and do not affect painted, coated, or plated surfaces. Contact your ZERUST® regional representative for full Safety Data Sheet (SDS) documentation and compliance information relevant to your jurisdiction.
