Overview

Product Overview

ZERUST® Zerion™ FVS-DB is a high-performance corrosion inhibitor specifically formulated for the external protection of aboveground storage tanks (ASTs), underground storage tanks (USTs), and buried pressure vessels. It is designed to be applied at the interface between the tank or vessel base and the surrounding sand pad or backfill material — the zone most vulnerable to electrochemical corrosion driven by moisture, dissolved salts, and microbial activity.

Developed by ZERUST, a global leader in corrosion prevention technology, FVS-DB combines proven inhibitor chemistry with a delivery format optimised for soil-contact applications. It is trusted by operators in the oil and gas, petrochemical, water infrastructure, and industrial storage sectors worldwide.

How It Works

FVS-DB employs a dual-action inhibition mechanism. Active inhibitor compounds migrate through the sand pad and backfill matrix to form a protective molecular layer on exposed metal surfaces. This layer interrupts the electrochemical reactions responsible for corrosion by passivating anodic and cathodic sites on the steel substrate.

In addition to contact inhibition at the metal surface, FVS-DB releases vapour-phase inhibitor (VpCI®) molecules that diffuse through the void spaces within the sand pad and backfill. This vapour-phase action ensures comprehensive coverage across irregular geometries, weld seams, and areas of imperfect surface contact — providing protection even where direct application is not possible.

Primary Applications

FVS-DB is engineered for use in the following applications:

  • Aboveground storage tank (AST) floor and base protection in contact with sand pads
  • Underground storage tank (UST) external surfaces in contact with native or imported backfill
  • Buried pressure vessels and process vessels in petrochemical and refinery facilities
  • Tank farm foundations and bunded areas where soil-to-metal contact is prolonged
  • New construction and retrofit/rehabilitation projects requiring enhanced corrosion control at the base interface

Performance in Gulf and Middle East Conditions

The Gulf and Middle East region presents some of the most aggressive corrosion environments in the world. Saline and chloride-rich soils, high ambient and ground temperatures, seasonal humidity fluctuations, and the presence of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) all accelerate external corrosion of buried and ground-contact steel structures.

FVS-DB is formulated to remain effective across the wide temperature ranges encountered in the region — from cool winter nights to extreme summer ground temperatures exceeding 60 °C. Its inhibitor compounds are thermally stable and maintain protective efficacy under sustained heat loading. The product’s compatibility with saline and high-conductivity soils makes it particularly well-suited to coastal and sabkha environments common across the Arabian Peninsula and Gulf coastline.

Application and Installation

FVS-DB is supplied in a form designed for straightforward integration into standard tank construction and maintenance workflows. During new construction, the product is distributed evenly across the prepared sand pad prior to tank placement. For retrofit applications on existing tanks, it can be introduced into the sand pad via injection ports or incorporated during scheduled maintenance outages.

Application requires no specialised equipment beyond standard site tools. Coverage rates should be calculated in accordance with ZERUST technical data sheets and site-specific soil assessments. Consult the ZERUST technical team for dosage guidance tailored to local soil conductivity, pH, and moisture conditions.

Compliance and Standards

ZERUST® Zerion™ FVS-DB is developed in alignment with industry standards governing corrosion protection of storage tanks and buried infrastructure, including API 651 (Cathodic Protection of Aboveground Petroleum Storage Tanks) and NACE SP0169 guidelines for external corrosion control. It is designed to complement — not replace — cathodic protection systems, providing an additional layer of chemical inhibition at the most vulnerable interface zone.
