Overview
What Are Camlock Couplings?
Camlock couplings, also known as cam-and-groove couplings, are a type of quick-disconnect fitting widely used in fluid transfer systems. They allow hoses and pipes to be connected or disconnected rapidly without the need for tools, threads, or clamps. The coupling consists of two parts: a male adapter (groove end) and a female coupler (cam end). When the male adapter is inserted into the female coupler, two cam arms are pressed down to lock the connection securely in place, creating a leak-free seal.
Material Options
Camlock couplings are available in a range of materials to suit different fluid types and operating environments:
- Aluminum: Lightweight and cost-effective; suitable for water, petroleum products, and general industrial use.
- Stainless Steel 304: Offers good corrosion resistance for food-grade, chemical, and marine applications.
- Stainless Steel 316: Superior corrosion resistance, ideal for aggressive chemicals, saltwater, and high-purity applications.
- Polypropylene: Lightweight, chemical-resistant plastic option suitable for acids, alkalis, and corrosive fluids.
Type Configurations
Camlock couplings are manufactured in seven standard configurations to accommodate different connection requirements:
- Type A: Male adapter with female thread (BSP/NPT).
- Type B: Female coupler with male thread (BSP/NPT).
- Type C: Female coupler with hose shank (barbed end).
- Type D: Female coupler with female thread (BSP/NPT).
- Type E: Male adapter with hose shank (barbed end).
- Type F: Male adapter with male thread (BSP/NPT).
- Type DP: Dust plug — a male adapter cap used to seal the female coupler when not in use.
Size Range & Working Pressure
These couplings are available in sizes ranging from 1/2" to 6" to accommodate a wide variety of hose and pipe diameters. The working pressure is rated at up to 200 psi, making them suitable for medium-pressure fluid transfer systems. Actual pressure ratings may vary by size and material.
Typical Applications
Camlock couplings are used across a broad range of industries and applications:
- Chemical transfer and processing
- Water and wastewater management
- Fuel and petroleum product transfer
- Agricultural irrigation and spraying systems
- Industrial fluid handling and manufacturing
Compliance & Standards
These camlock couplings conform to MIL-C-27487 (US Military Specification) and ANSI/ASME standards, ensuring dimensional interchangeability and consistent performance across manufacturers. This compliance guarantees that couplings from different suppliers can be used together reliably in the field.
