Overview

A CPVC socket — also referred to as a slip socket or end socket — is a pipe fitting manufactured from Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) designed to join two sections of CPVC pipe in a straight, in-line configuration. The fitting features slip socket ends on both sides, which accept the plain end of a CPVC pipe and create a permanent, leak-tight joint through solvent cement bonding. This joining method chemically fuses the pipe and fitting surfaces at a molecular level, producing a connection that is as strong as the pipe itself.

The solvent cement joining process is straightforward and reliable. A suitable CPVC solvent cement is applied to the outside of the pipe end and the inside of the socket. The pipe is then inserted into the socket and given a slight twist to distribute the cement evenly. As the solvent evaporates, the two surfaces fuse together, forming a homogeneous, pressure-rated joint. The smooth interior bore of the socket ensures consistent cement coverage and eliminates voids that could compromise joint integrity.

CPVC sockets are widely used in chemical processing plants, industrial fluid handling systems, water treatment facilities, and manufacturing environments where aggressive or corrosive media must be conveyed safely. Typical applications include acid distribution lines, caustic transfer systems, chlorinated water circuits, and process piping carrying solvents or industrial chemicals. Their compatibility with a broad spectrum of chemicals makes them a preferred choice over metal fittings in corrosive service conditions.

CPVC as a material offers significant advantages over standard PVC and many metallic alternatives. It maintains structural integrity and pressure ratings at elevated temperatures — up to 200°F (93°C) — making it suitable for hot chemical service where standard PVC would soften or fail. Its inherent chemical resistance covers a wide range of acids, bases, salts, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. CPVC is also non-conductive, corrosion-proof, and lightweight, reducing installation time and long-term maintenance costs.

These sockets conform to ASTM F439, the standard specification for socket-type CPVC plastic pipe fittings, Schedule 80. Compliance with this standard ensures consistent dimensional tolerances, material quality, and pressure performance across the full size range of 1/4" to 6".
