Overview

CS Pipe, Welded (SCH 40) is manufactured using the Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) process, in which a flat steel strip is formed into a tubular shape and the longitudinal seam is fused under heat and pressure without the addition of filler metal. This produces a consistent, high-integrity weld seam that meets the stringent requirements of ASTM A53 Grade B — one of the most widely specified standards for carbon steel pipe in industrial and commercial construction.

Conforming to ASTM A53 Grade B, this pipe offers a minimum yield strength of 35,000 psi and a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi, making it suitable for moderate- to high-pressure service conditions. The Schedule 40 (SCH 40) wall thickness designation provides a reliable balance between pressure capacity and weight, and is the most commonly used schedule for general-purpose piping systems across a broad range of industries.

Available in nominal pipe sizes (NPS) from 1/2" through 12", this product accommodates a wide variety of system configurations. Pipe ends are supplied as plain end (PE) for use with threaded or grooved couplings, or beveled end (BE) to facilitate butt-weld connections in welded piping systems. A hot-dip galvanized finish is available for applications requiring enhanced corrosion resistance, particularly in outdoor, underground, or humid environments.

This pipe is well-suited for conveying water, natural gas, compressed air, and other non-corrosive fluids, as well as for HVAC distribution systems and structural applications such as columns, handrails, and support frameworks. Its versatility and compliance with recognized industry standards make it a preferred choice for contractors, engineers, and facility managers working across utility, mechanical, and civil construction projects.

Installation should follow applicable codes and standards, including ASME B31.1 (Power Piping) or ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) as appropriate to the service. Proper support spacing, thermal expansion allowances, and joint preparation per the selected end type should be observed. For threaded connections, pipe should be cut and threaded in accordance with ASME B1.20.1. All field modifications should be inspected to ensure weld seam integrity is maintained.
