Overview
Eccentric and concentric reducers are butt-weld pipe fittings used to connect pipes of different diameters within a pipeline system. Both types serve the same fundamental purpose — reducing or expanding pipe bore — but differ in geometry and application.
Eccentric vs. Concentric Types
A concentric reducer is symmetrical about its central axis, making it ideal for vertical pipe runs where maintaining a centred flow path is important. It provides a smooth, uniform transition between pipe sizes and is commonly used in vertical process lines and pump suction applications where air pockets are not a concern.
An eccentric reducer has one flat side, offsetting the centreline of the two pipe ends. This flat-bottom orientation prevents air or gas accumulation in horizontal runs and facilitates drainage, making it the preferred choice for pump suction lines, horizontal pipelines, and systems where self-draining is required.
Materials & Construction
Reducers are available in Carbon Steel (CS), Stainless Steel 304, and Stainless Steel 316, covering a broad range of service conditions from general utility systems to corrosive and high-temperature process environments. All fittings feature butt-weld end connections for full-penetration welds, ensuring leak-tight, high-integrity joints suitable for pressure-critical applications.
Size range spans from 1/4" to 72" with step-down increments to accommodate standard pipe schedules. Wall thickness options range from SCH 10 through SCH 160 and XXS, providing flexibility across low- and high-pressure service requirements. All fittings are manufactured and dimensionally compliant with ASME B16.9, the governing standard for factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings.
Typical Applications
Eccentric and concentric reducers are widely used across process piping, HVAC distribution systems, oil and gas facilities, power generation, and general utility networks. Their smooth bore transition minimises turbulence and pressure drop, supporting efficient fluid handling in both liquid and gas service.
