Overview

Product Overview

The gate valve is a linear-motion isolation valve designed for full on/off shut-off service in pipelines carrying water, oil, gas, and steam. Its full-bore design ensures minimal pressure drop and unrestricted flow when fully open, making it the preferred choice for applications where flow efficiency and tight shut-off are critical. Gate valves are widely used across industrial plants, refineries, water treatment facilities, and municipal distribution networks.

Construction and Materials

Gate valves are available in a range of body materials to suit different service conditions and pressure requirements:

  • Cast Iron — economical option for low-pressure water and non-corrosive fluid services.
  • Ductile Iron — improved mechanical strength and impact resistance over cast iron, suitable for water and wastewater applications.
  • Carbon Steel — high-strength option for elevated pressure and temperature services including oil, gas, and steam pipelines.

Trim materials, including the stem, gate, and seat rings, are selected to match the body material and service medium, ensuring long-term sealing integrity and corrosion resistance.

Gate Types

Two principal gate configurations are available to address different sealing and flow requirements:

  • Wedge Gate — a solid, flexible, or split wedge disc that seats against inclined seat faces, providing a reliable bi-directional seal. Suitable for most general-purpose applications.
  • Parallel Gate (Slab Gate) — a flat disc that seats against parallel seat faces, commonly used in oil and gas pipeline applications where low operating torque and piggable bore are required.

Stem Design

The valve features an Outside Screw and Yoke (OS&Y) rising stem design. As the handwheel is turned, the stem rises visibly above the yoke, providing an immediate and unambiguous visual indication of the valve's open or closed position. This design also keeps the stem threads outside the flow medium, protecting them from corrosion and contamination and simplifying maintenance.

End Connections and Size Range

Gate valves are supplied with flanged end connections conforming to ANSI/ASME or EN/DIN standards, ensuring straightforward integration into existing piping systems. The available size range spans from 1/2" (DN15) up to 48" (DN1200), covering the full spectrum from small-bore instrument lines to large-diameter transmission mains.

Pressure Ratings

Pressure ratings are available across a broad range to accommodate diverse system requirements:

  • ANSI Class 150 through Class 600 (per ASME B16.34)
  • PN10 through PN40 (per EN 1092 / DIN standards)

Higher pressure classes may be available for specific applications. Consult technical documentation for pressure-temperature ratings applicable to the selected body material.

Typical Applications

Gate valves are suited to a wide range of on/off isolation duties across industries:

  • Water and wastewater — municipal distribution mains, treatment plants, pump stations
  • Oil and gas — upstream wellheads, midstream transmission pipelines, downstream refinery process lines
  • Steam — power generation, district heating, industrial process steam lines
  • General industrial — chemical processing, HVAC, fire protection systems

Gate valves are not recommended for throttling or flow-regulation service, as partial opening causes erosion of the gate and seat faces. They are intended exclusively for fully open or fully closed operation.
