Overview

Gauge siphons and pulsation snubbers are essential protective accessories for pressure gauges used in demanding industrial environments. Siphons create a fluid-filled barrier between the process medium and the gauge internals, preventing hot steam or high-temperature fluids from making direct contact with the Bourdon tube and movement. Pulsation snubbers, by contrast, dampen rapid pressure fluctuations and hydraulic shock that would otherwise cause premature wear, pointer flutter, or catastrophic gauge failure.

Two siphon configurations are available to suit different installation requirements. The pigtail siphon features a tight helical coil that traps condensate in a compact loop, making it ideal for space-constrained steam service applications. The coil siphon uses a larger-diameter loop that provides greater condensate volume and improved thermal isolation, offering enhanced protection in high-temperature or high-pressure steam lines. Both designs allow condensate to form a permanent liquid seal that keeps live steam away from the gauge.

Sintered stainless steel pulsation snubbers use a porous metal disc to restrict and dampen rapid pressure impulses before they reach the gauge. The controlled porosity of the sintered element allows steady-state pressure to be accurately transmitted while absorbing the energy of pressure spikes generated by reciprocating compressors, hydraulic pumps, and pulsating process flows. This extends gauge service life significantly and maintains measurement accuracy over time.

Both siphons and snubbers are available in 316 stainless steel and carbon steel to match the corrosion resistance and pressure requirements of the application. Connection sizes range from 1/4" to 1/2" in NPT and BSP thread forms, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of standard pressure gauge inlets and process piping configurations. The stainless steel variants are suited to corrosive media, food-grade, and hygienic applications, while carbon steel versions offer a cost-effective solution for general industrial service.

Typical applications include steam distribution and boiler systems, hydraulic power units, reciprocating air and gas compressors, chemical process piping, and water treatment facilities. These accessories install inline between the process connection and the gauge, requiring no special tools or modifications. By protecting gauges from thermal stress, corrosion, and mechanical shock, siphons and snubbers reduce maintenance costs and unplanned downtime across a wide range of industrial instrumentation installations.
