Overview
Operating Principle
The General Process Gauge operates on the proven Bourdon tube principle. A curved, hollow tube of elliptical cross-section is sealed at one end and connected to the process medium at the other. As pressure is applied, the tube tends to straighten, and this mechanical deflection is transmitted through a precision movement to drive the pointer across a calibrated dial. This simple yet highly reliable mechanism delivers accurate, repeatable pressure readings across a wide range of industrial applications.
Solid-Front Safety Construction
Designed for demanding process environments, the gauge features a solid-front case construction. A solid partition between the Bourdon tube chamber and the dial face directs any overpressure blowout safely away from the operator through a vented back. This design meets the safety requirements of ASME B40.1 and EN 837 standards, making it suitable for use with aggressive or hazardous media where gauge failure could pose a risk to personnel.
Liquid-Fillable Option
The gauge is available in a liquid-fillable configuration, typically filled with glycerine or silicone oil. Liquid filling provides effective damping of vibration and pressure pulsation, protecting the internal movement from fatigue and wear. This extends service life significantly in applications involving pumps, compressors, or other dynamic process equipment. The fill liquid also lubricates moving parts and prevents condensation on the dial, maintaining legibility in humid or outdoor environments.
Socket Material Options
Process connection sockets are available in stainless steel (316L) or forged carbon steel, allowing the gauge to be matched to the corrosivity and pressure class of the process medium. Stainless steel sockets are preferred for corrosive fluids, seawater service, and hygienic applications, while forged steel sockets offer high mechanical strength for elevated-pressure steam and hydrocarbon services. Both options are available in standard NPT, BSP, and DIN thread forms.
Standards Compliance
The General Process Gauge is manufactured and tested in accordance with ASME B40.1 (American) and EN 837-1 (European) standards. These standards govern accuracy class, case construction, dial markings, overpressure resistance, and safety requirements. Compliance ensures that the gauge meets internationally recognised performance benchmarks and can be specified with confidence for regulated industries including oil & gas, petrochemical, and water utilities.
Dial Sizes and Pressure Ranges
Available in dial sizes of 100 mm, 160 mm, and 250 mm, the gauge can be selected to suit panel-mount, field-mount, or remote-reading requirements. Pressure ranges extend from vacuum and compound ranges up to 1000 bar, covering the full spectrum of general process measurement needs. Accuracy class is typically 1.0% or 1.6% of full scale, in accordance with the applicable standard.
Typical Applications
The General Process Gauge is widely used across oil & gas production and refining, petrochemical and chemical processing, water and wastewater treatment, power generation, and general manufacturing. Its robust construction, broad material compatibility, and compliance with international standards make it the preferred choice for engineers specifying reliable pressure measurement in critical and non-critical process lines alike.
