What Is a Lap Joint Flange?

A lap joint flange is a two-piece assembly consisting of a loose flange ring and a stub end. Unlike fixed flanges, the flange ring is not welded directly to the pipe; instead, it slides freely over the pipe and backs up against the stub end. This loose-type design is one of its most distinctive and practical characteristics.

How It Works with Stub Ends

The lap joint flange is always used in conjunction with a long-radius stub end. The stub end is butt-welded to the pipe, while the flange ring remains free to rotate around it. This rotation allows the bolt holes to be aligned easily with the mating flange, eliminating the need for precise rotational positioning during installation. The result is a significant reduction in assembly time and effort.

Loose-Type Design Advantage

The loose-type design of the lap joint flange offers several key advantages. Because the flange ring is not permanently attached to the pipe, it can be reused even when the stub end or pipe section is replaced. This makes lap joint flanges especially cost-effective in systems that require frequent inspection, maintenance, or dismantling. The flange ring can also be made from a less expensive material than the stub end, reducing overall material costs in corrosive or high-purity applications.

Carbon Steel (CS) is the standard choice for general industrial applications, offering good mechanical strength and cost efficiency. Stainless Steel (SS304 and SS316) grades are selected for corrosive environments, hygienic applications, and elevated-temperature service. SS316 provides superior resistance to chlorides and acids, making it the preferred choice in chemical and marine environments.
