Overview
The industrial Bourdon tube pressure gauge is a robust, reliable instrument designed for accurate pressure measurement across a wide range of demanding industrial environments. Available in both glycerin-filled and dry configurations, this gauge is engineered to meet the rigorous requirements of oil & gas, petrochemical, water treatment, and HVAC applications.
Operating Principle
The Bourdon tube is a curved, hollow metallic tube sealed at one end. When process pressure is applied at the open end, the tube tends to straighten proportionally to the applied pressure. This mechanical deflection is transmitted through a precision gear-and-link movement to an indicating pointer on a calibrated dial, providing a direct, easy-to-read pressure reading without the need for any external power source.
Glycerin-Filled vs. Dry Versions
Glycerin-Filled: The gauge case is filled with glycerin (glycerol) liquid, which dampens pointer oscillation caused by pressure pulsation or mechanical vibration. This version is ideal for applications involving pumps, compressors, and hydraulic systems where continuous vibration or pressure spikes are present. The liquid fill also lubricates the movement and protects internal components from corrosion.
Dry Version: The standard dry gauge is suited for stable pressure environments with minimal vibration. It is preferred in applications where cleanliness is critical or where the gauge may be subject to temperature extremes that could affect liquid-filled gauges. Dry gauges are commonly used in HVAC systems, water treatment plants, and general industrial monitoring.
Materials and Construction
Key material and construction highlights include:
- SS 316 stainless steel socket (wetted parts) for superior corrosion resistance against aggressive media
- Bourdon tube manufactured from copper alloy or stainless steel depending on the pressure range and media compatibility
- Adjustable pointer for easy field calibration and zero adjustment
- Robust case available in stainless steel or phenolic resin for harsh environments
Pressure Ranges and Dial Sizes
These gauges cover an exceptionally wide measurement spectrum:
- Pressure ranges: from full vacuum (−1 bar) up to 1000 bar, including compound ranges
- Dial sizes: 40 mm, 50 mm, 63 mm, 80 mm, 100 mm, 160 mm, and 250 mm
- Connection sizes: 1/8", 1/4", 1/2" NPT or BSP, bottom or back entry
Standards Compliance
These pressure gauges are manufactured and tested in compliance with internationally recognised standards:
- ANSI/ASME B40.100 – American standard for pressure gauges
- EN 837-1 (DIN) – European standard for Bourdon tube pressure gauges
- JIS B 7505 – Japanese Industrial Standard for pressure gauges
Industries Served
This pressure gauge is widely deployed across multiple industries:
- Oil & Gas: Wellhead monitoring, pipeline pressure control, separator vessels
- Petrochemical: Reactor pressure monitoring, chemical process lines, storage tanks
- Water Treatment: Filtration systems, pump stations, distribution networks
- HVAC: Chiller systems, boiler pressure monitoring, air handling units
