Overview

The Reinforced Graphite Gasket is a high-performance sealing solution constructed from flexible graphite sheet reinforced with a stainless steel 304 (SS 304) tanged metal insert. The tanged insert is mechanically interlocked with the graphite layers, providing exceptional dimensional stability and blowout resistance under demanding operating conditions. This combination delivers the superior conformability and chemical inertness of flexible graphite alongside the structural integrity of stainless steel.

The SS 304 tanged insert acts as a reinforcing core that prevents the graphite from extruding or collapsing under high bolt loads and internal pressures. The tangs — small, lance-cut projections punched from the metal strip — grip the graphite on both faces, creating a unified composite structure. This design ensures the gasket maintains its sealing integrity even when subjected to thermal cycling, vibration, and pressure fluctuations common in industrial piping systems.

Reinforced graphite gaskets are widely used across demanding industries including petrochemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, and chemical manufacturing. They are ideally suited for sealing pipe flanges, valve bonnets, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and pump housings where reliable, long-term sealing is critical. Their compatibility with aggressive media — including acids, alkalis, steam, and hydrocarbons — makes them a preferred choice for challenging process environments.

These gaskets offer a maximum continuous service temperature of 550°C (1022°F) in non-oxidising atmospheres, with excellent resistance to thermal shock. The flexible graphite material provides outstanding chemical resistance to virtually all media except strong oxidising acids at elevated temperatures. The gaskets are rated for high-pressure applications up to PN 250 / Class 1500, making them suitable for the most demanding pressure-temperature combinations in industrial service.

The gaskets are available in two standard configurations: ring type (also known as inner bolt circle type) and full-face type, accommodating a wide range of flange standards including ASME B16.21 and EN 1514-1. Standard thicknesses range from 1.5 mm to 3.2 mm, and custom dimensions can be manufactured to suit specific flange requirements. Both configurations can be supplied with or without eyelets for ease of handling and installation.
