Overview

The Solenoid Air Valve is a solenoid-operated directional control valve designed to manage the flow of compressed air in pneumatic circuits. By energising or de-energising an electromagnetic coil, the valve shifts its internal spool or poppet to open, close, or redirect airflow paths. This electro-pneumatic switching action makes solenoid air valves the primary interface between electronic control systems and pneumatic actuators, enabling precise, repeatable, and rapid control of cylinders, rotary actuators, and other pneumatic devices.

Solenoid directional control valves operate on the principle of electromagnetic actuation. When electrical current passes through the coil, it generates a magnetic field that pulls a ferromagnetic plunger or armature, mechanically shifting the valve element. In single-solenoid (spring-return) variants, the spring returns the spool to its default position when the coil is de-energised, providing a defined fail-safe state. Double-solenoid (bistable) variants use two opposing coils; the valve remains in its last switched position even after power is removed, making them suitable for applications where position retention is critical during power interruptions.

Configurations and Port Arrangements

Solenoid air valves are available in multiple port and position configurations to suit a wide range of pneumatic circuit requirements. The 2/2 configuration functions as a simple on/off valve. The 3/2 configuration is commonly used to control single-acting cylinders. The 5/2 configuration drives double-acting cylinders by alternately pressurising and exhausting each cylinder port. The 5/3 configuration adds a centre position providing additional control flexibility.

Electrical Options and Coil Standard

Coils are available in 24V DC, 110V AC, and 220V AC ratings to integrate with standard industrial control voltages. All coils conform to the DIN 43650 (ISO 4400) standard, ensuring compatibility with widely available plug connectors and simplifying field wiring and replacement.

Applications

Solenoid air valves are used across a broad spectrum of industrial applications including factory automation, process control, packaging machinery, material handling conveyors, injection moulding equipment, and general-purpose pneumatic panels.

Installation and Maintenance

Valves should be installed with filtered, lubricated (or lubrication-free rated) compressed air within the specified operating pressure range of 0.15 to 0.8 MPa (1.5 to 8 bar). The IP65 ingress protection rating ensures reliable operation in dusty or wash-down environments.
