Overview
A spring check valve is a one-way flow control device designed to allow fluid to pass in a single direction while automatically preventing reverse flow. The valve closes instantly when forward flow ceases or when backpressure develops, protecting upstream equipment, instrumentation, and pipework from contamination and pressure surges.
How It Works
The spring-loaded poppet disc mechanism is the heart of this valve. In normal operation, upstream pressure overcomes the spring force, lifting the poppet disc off its seat and allowing flow through the valve body. When flow stops or backpressure exceeds inlet pressure, the spring immediately returns the poppet disc to its seat, creating a positive seal and blocking reverse flow. This action requires no external actuation and is entirely self-contained.
Applications
Spring check valves are widely used across a broad range of industries and service conditions:
- Instrument lines – protecting gauges, transmitters, and analyzers from backflow
- Process lines – chemical dosing, pump discharge, and reactor feed systems
- Water lines – potable water, cooling water, and irrigation systems
- Oil and gas – hydraulic control lines, wellhead instrumentation, and fuel systems
Materials and Construction
Valve bodies are available in brass for general-purpose water and low-pressure applications, and in stainless steel 316 (SS 316) for corrosive media, high-temperature service, and hygienic or offshore environments. Internal components including the poppet disc, spring, and seat are selected to match the body material and service conditions.
Connection Types and Size Range
End connections are available in NPT (National Pipe Thread) and BSP (British Standard Pipe) male threaded configurations, enabling direct installation into standard pipe fittings and manifolds without additional adapters. The valve is offered in sizes from 1/4" to 2", covering the majority of instrument and process line requirements.
Performance
The valve is rated for a maximum working pressure of 25 bar, with a typical cracking pressure of approximately 0.3 bar. The streamlined internal flow path is engineered for minimal pressure drop across the valve, ensuring efficient system performance even at low flow rates. The SS 316 variant supports service temperatures from -20°C to 180°C.
Installation and Maintenance
The compact inline body allows installation in horizontal or vertical pipework. Ensure the flow direction arrow marked on the valve body is aligned with the intended flow direction before installation. Apply appropriate thread sealant (PTFE tape or thread compound) to the male threads. The valve is largely maintenance-free; however, periodic inspection of the poppet disc and seat for wear or debris is recommended in demanding service conditions. Replacement of internal components can be carried out without removing the valve body from the line.
