Overview
The Threaded Y Fitting is a Y-branch pipe fitting designed to split a single flow stream into two branches, or to combine two branch flows into one, at a 45° angle. This geometry reduces turbulence and pressure drop compared to tee fittings, making it well suited to both utility and process piping applications where flow efficiency is a priority.
Material Options
Threaded Y fittings are available in three principal materials to suit a wide range of service conditions:
- Galvanized Iron (GI): Malleable iron with a hot-dip zinc coating, offering corrosion resistance for water supply, HVAC, and general utility services.
- Carbon Steel (CS): High-strength forged or cast carbon steel for steam, oil, gas, and industrial process lines operating at elevated pressures and temperatures.
- Stainless Steel (SS): Grades 304 and 316 available for corrosive media, hygienic applications, and environments requiring high oxidation resistance.
Thread Standards
Fittings are threaded to either BSP (British Standard Pipe) or NPT (National Pipe Taper) standards. BSP threads conform to ISO 7/1 and are widely used in international and Middle Eastern installations, while NPT threads comply with ASME B1.20.1 and are standard in North American systems. Both thread forms provide a pressure-tight seal when used with appropriate thread sealant or PTFE tape.
Branch Configurations
Y fittings are supplied in equal branch and reducing branch configurations. Equal branch fittings maintain the same nominal bore across all three ports, ensuring balanced flow distribution. Reducing branch fittings feature a smaller-diameter branch outlet, allowing a portion of the flow to be diverted to a secondary line of a different pipe size without additional reducers.
Size Range and Construction
Available in nominal pipe sizes from 1/4" to 4", covering the majority of utility and light-to-medium process piping requirements. Fittings are manufactured by either forging or casting. Forged fittings offer superior grain structure, higher pressure ratings, and tighter dimensional tolerances, making them preferred for critical service. Cast fittings provide a cost-effective solution for lower-pressure general-purpose applications.
Typical Applications
Threaded Y fittings are used across a broad range of industries and services, including potable water distribution, fire protection systems, compressed air networks, steam condensate lines, oil and gas gathering systems, chemical process plants, and HVAC installations. Their 45° branch angle makes them particularly effective in drain, waste, and vent (DWV) configurations and in any system where minimising flow resistance at branch points is important.
