Product Overview

The Y-Strainer is a mechanical device installed inline in a pipeline to remove solid particulate matter — such as scale, rust, sand, and debris — from flowing media. Its distinctive Y-shaped body houses a perforated or mesh screen element that captures contaminants while allowing clean fluid to pass through, protecting downstream equipment such as pumps, valves, meters, and heat exchangers from damage and premature wear.

Construction Materials

Y-Strainer bodies are available in Stainless Steel SS 316 or SS 304 for corrosion-resistant applications, and in Cast Iron for general-purpose industrial service. The screen element is manufactured from stainless steel mesh, ensuring durability and resistance to corrosion across a wide range of process media. All wetted parts are selected to match the service conditions, providing long service life with minimal maintenance.

Connection Types

Y-Strainers are available with flanged end connections conforming to ANSI or DIN standards, suitable for larger pipe sizes and higher-pressure systems. Threaded (NPT/BSP) end connections are available for smaller pipe sizes and lower-pressure applications. Both connection types allow straightforward integration into existing piping systems without special adapters.

Screen Mesh Range

The stainless steel mesh screen is available in a range of 20 to 200 mesh, allowing selection of the appropriate filtration fineness for the application. Coarser mesh (20–40) is used for general pipeline protection, while finer mesh (100–200) is suited for applications requiring removal of smaller particulates. Screens are easily removable for cleaning or replacement.

Pressure Ratings

Y-Strainers are rated for operating pressures from PN16 to PN40, covering a broad range of industrial pipeline systems. The pressure rating is determined by the body material, size, and connection type. Always verify that the selected strainer rating meets or exceeds the maximum allowable operating pressure of the system.

Size Range

Available in pipe sizes from 1/2" (DN15) to 16" (DN400), Y-Strainers can be specified for virtually any pipeline diameter encountered in industrial, commercial, and utility applications. Size selection should account for flow velocity, allowable pressure drop, and the volume of particulate expected in service.

Blow-Down Drain Plug

Each Y-Strainer is fitted with a blow-down drain plug at the bottom of the screen pocket. This allows accumulated debris to be flushed out without removing the strainer from the pipeline, minimising downtime during maintenance. In continuous-process applications, a blow-down valve can be fitted in place of the plug to enable periodic flushing under pressure.

Installation Notes

Y-Strainers should be installed with the screen pocket oriented downward (6 o'clock position) to allow gravity-assisted collection of debris and to facilitate blow-down. Ensure the flow direction arrow on the body matches the direction of flow in the pipeline. Provide sufficient clearance below the strainer to allow removal of the screen element for inspection and cleaning. Install isolation valves upstream and downstream to allow maintenance without shutting down the entire system.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular inspection of the screen element is recommended, with cleaning frequency determined by the level of particulate in the system. To clean: isolate the strainer, depressurise and drain the screen pocket via the blow-down plug, remove the screen cap or cover, extract the screen element, flush or brush clean, inspect for damage, and reinstall. Replace the screen if it shows signs of corrosion, deformation, or perforation. Differential pressure gauges fitted across the strainer can indicate when cleaning is required by showing an increase in pressure drop.
